Extended scientific evaluation and exploitation of the MOONRISE project (X-Science)

Project Description:

The project "X-Science - Extended scientific evaluation and exploitation of the MOONRISE project" aims to make the scientific findings of the MOONRISE project more usable for the subsequent scientific and technical exploitation. In the MOONRISE project, the laser-based additive manufacturing technology developed by the Institute of Space Systems (IRAS) and the Laser Center Hanover (LZH), which is used to build infrastructure on the moon from locally available raw materials, is to be tested directly on the surface of the moon. This is the first time worldwide to provide technical evidence that local resources can be used for space missions. The low mass of approx. 2kg and the small volume of about one liter make it possible to transport this payload to the moon within a few years as part of a commercial land mission.

The following work is planned as part of the X-Science project:

  • Production of a regolith simulants adapted to the planned landing site. This includes the characterization of the material and the execution of processing tests. This is intended to achieve a significantly deeper understanding of the regolith material expected at the landing site and its properties.

  • The reproduction of the phenomena observed on the moon enables a deeper understanding of the behavior of the regolith during processing. On this basis, sintered bodies are to be produced in the IRAS regolith laboratory, which correspond to the samples produced on the moon.

  • At the end of the MOONRISE project, a one-year phase begins as part of X-Science, in which all results are to be reviewed and published. It is also planned to contact other working groups that are also working on similar topics in order to prepare follow-up projects and the use of technologies on the moon and earth.
